Message From Our Chapter President
I have always believed in the importance of getting involved and being active in the community whether it is the legal community or your local community. Each one of us had assistance in getting where we are today and it is truly important to give back to others. Attending events hosted by others is great but it is much more rewarding to be one of the people responsible for the planning of the event!
Taking on additional responsibilities can be difficult for all of us with such limited time. We are juggling our careers and our families. Most of us have constant deadlines that we need to meet and family obligations. However, I challenge you this year to carve out just a few hours each month to give back. Several years ago Samantha Schosberg Feuer posed the same challenge to me, when she asked me to chair a committee for PBC FAWL. I was nervous of course, since I was stepping outside of my comfort zone. However, I accepted her challenge and have never regretted one minute of it!
In taking on the challenge of truly being active with local bar activities I gained two very important things. First, I gained friendships with people who have the same types of struggles I have had in my career. Before taking on the challenge I had marketing contacts I was friendly with but not many were true friends. Secondly, I gained knowledge as I learn each and every day from those who are actively working with me on the planning of bar activities. Emerson said: “Every man I meet is my superior in some way, in that, I learn from him.” Every day that passes is a continued learning experience from the Board Members and Committee Chairs I work with and I have become the person I am in part because of many of them!
After chairing my first committee I was continually challenged to take on new positions by Leora Freire, Allison Lane and Sarah Cortvriend. I was hesitant to take on new committee and board positions. Again though, I forced myself out of my comfort zone and accepted the challenge. A good leader creates followers but a great leader creates other leaders! That has been the path of past leaders of this great organization and it is a path I will continue on despite having large shoes to fill!
I did not need to wait for someone in leadership to walk up and ask me to take the challenge to chair a committee. In looking back the only regret I have is not becoming active sooner! I challenge you to reach out to us this year and promise you that you will not be disappointed! You may even find as I did that you truly enjoy being involved with bar activities and making an impact on the legal community!
